Pickle Barrel Adirondack Furniture

Our studio has taken a classic American icon and made the Adirondack design as comfortable as possible. Notice the curved front that slopes behind the knee and the chair back that contours for comfort. The clean lines of this chair are enhanced by hiding almost all of the hardware, any visible hardware is stainless steel. This decision was not only made for the look of the piece of furniture, it also increases the longevity of the piece.
Besides recycling a design that symbolizes comfort and relaxation, our materials are reclaimed in the extreme. This priceless old-growth Cypress comes from thousand year-old trees. As a piece of furniture, this wood is experiencing its third career. First as a tree living in a southern Cypress grove, then in the 1920s the wood was built into sizable pickle barrels (about 10 feet in diameter and 8 to 10 feet tall), after 70 years of service the barrels were retired. We purchased the wood from Trestlewood to build furniture.

A Note about Furniture Maintenance
Bolts: they are stainless steel, and while they will not rust, they will loosen over time. You will need to tighten them occasionally. Use a 7/16" wrench. Tighten firmly but not too much that you crush or crack the wood.

A Note about Finish Choices
Unfinished or natural: The easiest thing to do is nothing. It is perfectly acceptable for the wood. The furniture will turn a slivery grey color over time. Surface checks, or tiny cracks, will appear. That is to be expected from wood. The furniture will remain structurely sound for years and years to come.

Oil: The easiest finish to apply is oil. We recommend Penofin oil. This product may take several weeks to fully cure. Before applying, make sure there is no dirt on the wood. This oil will last one to two years then will need to be reapplied. Surface checks, or tiny cracks, will appear. That is
to be expected from wood. The furniture will remain structurely sound for years and years to come.

Sikkens Cetol 1: This is a longer lasting finish. It is available in many shades and several colors. It can last as long as five years. It does not require stripping when reapplying. Surface checks, or tiny cracks, will appear. That is to be expected from wood. The furniture will remain structurely sound
for years and years to come.

Staining: You could use a deck stain on the wood. The advantage to a stain versus paint is that when you reapply stain in the future you reapply over the previous coat. Surface checks, or tiny cracks, will appear. That is to be expected from wood. The furniture will remain structurely sound
for years and years to come.

Painting: Use a latex primer first followed by a latex paint. This will have to be stripped in the future if you want to paint it again. Surface checks, or tiny cracks, will appear. That is to be expected from wood. The furniture will remain structurely sound for years and years to come.

We don’t recommend varnish as a finish because of its short life span.
Before reapplying the product, the old varnish must be completely
removed.
